Product Philosophy:

Carbonite has an absolutely brilliant pricing structure; unlimited backups at a low, flat rate. That is one deal that is hard to beat when comparing cloud hosting service companies. With their set it, forget it and relax mentality, Carbonite makes everything easy for their clients and even offers great additional features without additional cost. This company has several low priced solutions for both personal use and business use. The Business and Business Premier packages offer backups for unlimited desktops and laptop computers. This is a vital offering for small businesses that are looking to protect their valuable client and project data. The Home and Home Office solutions are priced very reasonably with the greatest value in their 3 year plan.

Security:

Carbonite is a secure cloud storage backup service, but do not make it a selling point for their services.

Storage:

The storage space offered by Carbonite for their Home and Home Office solutions is unlimited, which is an incredible deal. The small business packages are offered at 250 GB and 500 GB which should be perfect for smaller businesses, but medium to large sized businesses may want to look elsewhere.

Ease Of Use:

Carbonite offers one of the easiest to use cloud hosting and storage services on the market. It is designed for general users and small business owners that simply don’t have time to fiddle with complexity. The desktop recovery feature makes those easy to make mistakes like deleting a needed folder, a simple problem to fix. Accidental deletions can be immediately repaired when using the Carbonite desktop application. Now that’s easy! Furthermore, if your computer is stolen or is fried, users can log into their Carbonite account on their new computer, hit Restore and their files can be downloaded to their new system.

Help/Support:

Carbonite offers live chat support, phone support and email support at every level of service. This is another nice feature that Carbonite was smart to offer simply because many of their competitors charge for support services.

    Restore Process Broken

I had 3 computers with their service for many years. Then, I lost my hard drive on 1 machine that had 90G backed up & tried my best to do a full restore for over 2 months. In spite of tons of phone calls to support (and phone support is a lot better than chat), none of the restores ever completely finished. Most of them ran for up to 5 days before ending without restoring all backed up data. The machine is 2 yrs old, has plenty of power & I have a cable connection with 50M download speed. I eventually managed to get all of my data by restoring one folder at a time. This cost my business a lot of money and time. I got a refund for all 3 machines.

    Why bother, its out-dated tech.

Carbonite is out-dated tech, that’s been left in the dust by other, fresher companies. Soon, Google will enter the market and Carbonite will fall off the map. Don’t waste your money, on a service that can be had for cheaper and far better performance (especially in regards to backup speeds).

    Not compatible with Lion

I have been using Carbonite for the past year. Initially seemed to work well on Snow Leopard (slow uploads), but once I changed to Lion it does not work. Constantly taxes my CPU causing it to heat up and the fans to come on. Per support, have tried multiple times to reinstall, but problem persists. My friend has been having similar problems. Have read online that Carbonite knows they are not compatible with Lion…not sure why this is so. Can only imagine the problems that will occur with an upgrade to Mountain Lion. Goodbye Carbonite.

Upload speed far too slow to be usable.

I purchased carbonite to backup around 260GB of valuable data. The upload speed is so slow that when I did the maths it came out that it would take around 170 days for it to even finish the initial backup and that’s only if I switch on my computer every day and leave it to run untill late at night when I go to sleep! This is far too slow and means that for the 360 days subscription that I’m paying for, at most I’m only covered for 190 days of the first year. They admit that they use upload bandwidth throttling techniques which I can understand…but to restrict it to such a slow speed is unacceptable and renders the software and service NOT fit for purpose. I have now canceled my subscription on this basis and now better researching to find a suitable replacment.

Loses Files when you \"Save as\"

If you have File1 open in an application (Excel, Corel), you make a change and Save File1, then realized you wanted to rename it, and Save As File2, hoping to get File1 back from Carbonite – you can’t! You have not backups for File1 or File2. You can recover it by doing a complete uninstall and downloading the backup information again. It’s a bad flaw that Carbonite blames on Windows.

Carbonite Pro was started by a couple of people that had witnessed first-hand what kind of damage can be done when a computer is not backed up, and decided to make it easy and available to anyone that wanted that type of service. While burning everything to DVDs and CDs used to be the best way to back things up, the introduction of cloud storage opened up a whole new ball game.

Features:

  • New Version Just Released
  • High Security Levels Put In Place
  • Free 30-day Trial
  • Chance to win 1 year of free service
  • Easy to Use

Product Philosophy:

Carbonite Pro provides a fast, easy, and affordable way to backup any type of computer, home or business, and all of the files and file types located on them. Their prices are low and affordable so that this type of service can be used by all demographics regardless of what their budget is. Carbonite Pro was designed to be used by people that use the computer on a daily basis for work as well as those who just know how to do a few things, like check their email.

Security:

Carbonite Pro has decided to go with Blowfish’s 128-bit encryption for all of their client’s information, which is an extremely secure way to go. All of their data centers are climate-controlled so that heat or moisture never becomes a problem with any of the machines. In case of inclement weather or a power surge, backup generators will take over the job of powering the servers so that your files will never get interrupted, and you will always have access to them.

Storage:

With Carbonite Pro you won’t have to worry about receiving monthly bills and scraping up the money. Instead just pay one time a year, and you are guaranteed to receive secure file storage the entire year through. If you find that there are months where you needed additional storage space, this is available per month for a small fee. This is a great benefit because it means you won’t get stuck paying for more space than you actually need.

Ease Of Use:

Carbonite Pro was created with their clientele in mind. Since they range from college students wanting to make sure their hard earned papers don’t get lost to older people wanting to save cherished family photos for good, you know that this will be one of the simplest programs you have ever used.

Help/Support:

You probably won’t have any problems with using Carbonite Pro, but just in case there is anything that is not incredibly clear or that you are confused about there are plenty of options available for you. Of course, they are always available by telephone or email, but if you are more interested in discovering a solution yourself then consider looking in their frequently asked questions area and the helpful articles that they have posted. Most times the answers you need are found in these areas and you won’t feel the need to call or email them at all!
